Developed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz UK, EconoSpeed is a dynamic throttle controller that allows a vehicle's maximum road speed, engine speed, and maximum rate of acceleration to be limited by any customer defined criteria. For example a national carrier chooses the following:
- Maximum road speed to be limited to 62 MPH / 100 KPH.
- Maximum rate of acceleration set to the figure normally obtained under 'full or part-load' conditions.
- Maximum engine RPM set to 3300 RPM.
Curbs "heavy footed" driving
Whether empty or loaded, the vehicle will now accelerate at more or less similar speeds! The drivers ability to accelerate harshly or to 'over-rev' the engine is subsequently removed and as engine torque is completely unaffected, uphill gradients will be handled as normal.
Simple, effective control
By electronically restricting the vehicle's maximum rate of acceleration to simulate that of a part-laden vehicle, and forcing earlier gear changes by limiting the maximum revs, we can mimic the behaviour of a careful, economical driver. EconoSpeed is a 'fit and forget' system, with no training or management required. It simply means drivers will no longer be able to over-rev their engines but when they need it, for example on a steep hill or with a heavy load, full power will still be available.
